What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• provide a full range of administrative and secretarial services
• prepare a variety of legal documents including letters, memos, reports, presentation materials and statistical reports
• maintain Ontario and Superior Court files and prepare subpoenas
• provide reception duties by answering inquiries in-person and over the telephone
• liaise with staff in other field offices regarding prosecution matters, referring victims, responding to inquiries and explaining procedures

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You can type 50 words per minute and are able to achieve 70% in a series of tests for spelling, word usage and sentence recognition

Legal Knowledge

• You are able to apply relevant statutes, rules, regulations, policies and practices such as Rules of Criminal Procedure, legal office, criminal prosecution programs, and court procedures to prepare for proceedings, prepare/distribute/track disclosures, answer telephone and counter inquiries and maintain Crown briefs
• You have knowledge of legal terminology to prepare legal documents, explain procedures, transcribe from Dictaphone and compose from verbal instructions

Administrative Skills

• You demonstrate legal secretarial and administrative experience such as updating files, arranging meetings, completing travel arrangements, ordering transcripts, purchasing goods and services, processing payments, etc
• You are able to use data base applications, computer equipment and related software such as such as Microsoft Office and Windows to produce letters, memoranda, reports and legal documents

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You have excellent oral and written communication skills to provide information to police, victims/witnesses, media, court staff and the general public
• Your interpersonal skills enable you to work effectively as a team member with minimal supervision

Analytical, Judgement and Organizational Skills

• You demonstrate initiative and good judgement by using appropriate legal terminology when preparing for proceedings and typing legal documents
• You are able to prioritize your workload while meeting conflicting deadlines
