The Communications Branch within the Ministry of Transportation is seeking an experienced leader to join their team as the Assistant Director, Strategic Communications.

Communications Branch at MTO
The Communications Branch within the Ministry of Transportation provides strategic communications advice, issues management, corporate communications, and digital services. The Strategic Communications Office within this branch provides ministry-wide strategic communications advice, develops "snapshot" plans, and provides communications oversight support and advice to provincial transportation agencies (including Metrolinx, Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, and the Owen Sound Transportation Company).

What can I expect to do in this role?

As the Assistant Director, Strategic Communications, you will:

• Manage a full range of communications functions, including strategic communications, issues management and media relations, digital/social media, marketing/public education, correspondence, and translation/editorial services.
• Lead a team of 11 communications professionals to provide communications expertise and advice during the policy development process; and to develop, implement, evaluate, and support strategic communications planning for ministry and corporate projects.
• Motivate, coach, mentor and manage of team of professional staff, while supporting and promoting a productive, diverse and inclusive work environment.
• Provide strategic communications expertise and advice to Ministry of Transportation executives, Minister's Office, senior management, and staff on communications strategies, options, products, recommendations, risks, and issues management.
• Manage the development of proactive and innovative multi-year strategic communications and marketing plans and products that support ministry/government business directions and priorities.

• You have experience leading, coaching, and mentoring high-performing staff.
• You are a collaborative, strategic leader who can promote a culture of inclusion, accountability and efficiency.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management

• You have experience liaising with and building and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, partners, and clients across a large and complex organization. You can promote partnerships, joint initiatives, and consultations for strategy and planning.
• You have strong verbal communications skills, and a high degree of tact and political acuity to confidently delivery high profile briefings the Minister, Deputy Ministers, and other senior executives.
• You have experience with building consensus, negotiating, and managing relationships in a politically sensitive environment.
• You demonstrate innovative thinking, issues management and problem-solving skills.

Technical Skills

• You have experience with large-scale communications planning to provide leadership and expertise in the development and evaluation of communications plans, products, tools, program frameworks and new approaches.
• You have strong oral and written communications skills to effectively explain recommendations, strategies, policy/program details and key messages.
• You have demonstrated political acuity, organizational awareness and tact while successfully managing high-profile sensitive issues and relationships.
• You have knowledge of project management principles and methodologies to oversee and guide the overall delivery of mandates and strategies.
