What can I expect to do in this role?

As a desk auditor, you will have an opportunity to gain enhanced exposure to, and knowledge of, multiple tax statutes so that your knowledge base is varied and fulsome.

Your work activities may involve planning and conducting in-depth desk audits of taxpayer returns and refund claims, including obtaining and reviewing financial and non-financial information from various sources, promoting voluntary compliance with Ontario tax legislation, and providing in-depth audit reports.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory:

• You must have graduated or will complete the requirements to graduate with a degree, diploma, or post-graduate certificate from a recognized or legally authorized post-secondary institution in the last two years (May 2021-June 2023)
- Internships are open to persons with disabilities who have graduated from an eligible post-secondary program in the last five years (May 2018-June 2023)
- Internships are open to all Indigenous applicants who have graduated from an eligible post-secondary program in the last five years (May 2018-June 2023).
- Internships are open to all Black applicants who have graduated from an eligible post-secondary program in the last five years (May 2018-June 2023).

• You must be legally entitled to work in Canada

• You have obtained the following accreditation:
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Program: Successful completion of Modules 1 through 6 of the CPA Prep program; or
- Certified General Accountant (CGA) Program: Successful completion of Levels 1 and 2; or
- Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Program: Successful completion of 6 courses at the Pre-Professional level, including 3 accounting courses; or
- Academic Equivalent: Successful completion of 6 courses of a recognized university/community college program plus or including courses in Introductory Financial Accounting and Intermediate Financial Accounting.

Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide proof of designation/academic qualifications. Candidates will be asked to clearly indicate on their transcripts which of their courses meet the position's academic requirement. Candidates who obtained their qualifications outside Canada will be asked to provide proof that these qualifications are recognized as equivalencies in Canada.

Technical Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of the principles and practices of auditing, financial statement analysis, accounting principles, systems and procedures
• You can plan audits and reviews, determine the audit approach, sampling techniques, sample sizes and depth of audit, access and review information sources, and recommend reassessment or referral for enforcement
• You can gain knowledge of relevant Ontario tax legislation (Acts and Regulations), and inter-jurisdictional agreements
• You can gain knowledge of ministry and branch rulings, directives, guidelines and administrative policies and practices
• You can gain knowledge of ministry-approved systems (e.g. OntTax), relevant internal and external databases, and desktop software

Research and Analytical Skills:

• You have proven research, analytical and investigative skills, to analyze documents and business records to determine tax liabilities, perform audits, evaluate results, identify and resolve compliance problems, and participate in projects to identify non-compliance
• You can effectively synthesize data and information from a number of sources including financial statements and related schedules, calculations, reported tax return liabilities and assessment notices

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• You have effective oral and written communication skills to deal effectively with others, prepare correspondence and audit working papers, and draft audit and operational improvement reports
• You have proven interpersonal skills to manage the audit relationship and deal with taxpayers in a sensitive and professional manner
