The OPS Internship Program for Internationally Trained Engineers (ITEs) provides work placements for immigrated engineers who are foreign-trained, licensed and have three or more years international experience.

What can I expect to do in this role?

The internship experience is designed to give the relevant Canadian work experience required for licensing by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), the licensing body for engineers in Ontario, so interns can meet licence requirements and join Ontario's labour market.

Interns will carry out a variety of engineering projects and/or assignments in the Environmental Permissions Branch of the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Park, located at 135 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario, to address environmental and human health impacts associated with safe drinking water, municipal and industrial wastewater management and waste management, for applications and projects with predictable environmental impacts, under the supervision of a senior engineer.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

Eligible candidates must be able to demonstrate that they have been screened through Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) to ascertain that they qualify by satisfying technical/educational requirements for licensing (including successful completion of the Professional Practice Exam), except for the 12-months of Canadian Experience. Well-developed problem solving and communication skills; proficiency in English, ability to work co-operatively, lead/participate on project teams, and plan and organize work, eligible for work and licensing in Canada.

Work requires an engineering degree (e.g., environmental, civil, water resources, chemical,) and eligible to obtain a Provisional License from Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO). Some positions may require the ability to travel within the province.

Engineering and Environmental Knowledge

• You will have knowledge in the application of engineering theories, principles and practices of engineering in your discipline
• Provide engineering support and interpretive analysis of applicable legislation, guidelines, policy and best management practices
• You have current knowledge of emerging trends and issues in your engineering discipline, Issues Management and Problem Solving Skills
• You can independently analyze issues and provide recommendations of acceptance or rejection of applications to Senior Management;
• You can identify contentious issues and participate in the resolution of the issues.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You work well with others and establish stable working relationships
• You have strong writing skills to prepare, edit, and proofread a variety of written materials (e.g. letters, reports, etc.)
• You communicate information in a clear, concise, and logical manner
• You can identify and resolve problems and handle conflicting priorities
• You have good interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships and liaise with proponents, consultants, industry and government officials, the public and stakeholder groups;

Organizational and Computer Skills

• You demonstrate strong initiative and can plan and organize your work to maximize efficiency.
• You have strong computer skills and know how to use related software (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets and database applications).
