About the Mapping and Information Resources Branch

The Branch is an essential partner in the management of Ontario's natural resources. We ensure decisions are supported by the best available data and advice through leadership in Crown land surveying, mapping and information management. The Office of the Surveyor General oversees all legal descriptions used to issue surface and mineral rights on Ontario Crown land, land claims settlements and regulatory control on land development and use.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• act as the Ministry's Crown Survey expert, serving staff of the ministry, other government agencies, private surveyors and the public
• provide advice to clients, and represent the provincial Crown on legal survey matters during tri-party negotiations with Canada and First Nations
• manage ongoing projects and provide technical direction to staff preparing or reviewing surveys/descriptions for Crown patents, Mining Claims and Regulatory plans
• participate in the development of survey-related legislation, regulations, policies and procedures for the Province

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirement:

• You must be licensed as an Ontario Land Surveyor by the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors.
*Consideration will be given to licensed land surveyors from other jurisdictions in Canada or those capable of obtaining a license in Ontario within the first 6 months of employment.

Technical knowledge and skills:

• knowledge of Crown Survey systems, constitutional law, common law and statutes, such as Canada Lands Surveys Act, Canada Lands Surveyors Act, Public Lands Act, Mining Act, Beds of Navigable Waters Act
• knowledge of land-related provincial and federal statutes, regulations, and Ontario treaties
• proficiency in the use of computers/software related to surveying, mapping and business processes

Research, analytical and problem-solving skills:

• research, analytical and problem-solving skills to investigate records, evaluate and formulate opinions and identify solutions to project, staff and/or client problems

Interpersonal and communications skills:

• strong interpersonal, negotiation and supervisory skills to provide direction to staff, resolve conflicts, and negotiate with staff and partners
• advanced oral and written communication skills to convey complex ideas, opinions or decisions with clarity, and to prepare affidavits, correspondence, and reports in a timely and sensitive manner
