Amendment Note: Effective January 1st, 2024 the salary range for this position is $25.62 to $27.70 per hour in compliance with OPSEU Correctional Bargaining Unit collective agreement provisions. The new rates, effective retroactive to January 1, 2024, were recently confirmed and dates for implementation of the new salary rates are still to be determined.Please Note: This temporary position is irregularly scheduled on-call and the hours of work vary from 0-40 hours per week, with no minimum guaranteed number of hours.

What can I expect to do in this role?
In a large-volume facility kitchen, you will:
• Participate in all areas of meal preparation, safety, security and food inventory/rotation
• Maintain housekeeping and sanitary work conditions
• Inspect eating facilities and equipment to ensure standards are maintained
• Follow prescribed menus, work schedules and dietary charts, and substituting menu changes
• Serve and portion meals
• Train and supervise youth helpers
How do I qualify?
Food Services Knowledge and Experience
• You have knowledge and experience in general and volume cooking
• You can prepare meals according to prescribed menus and accommodate special diets
• You have experience in the proper and safe use of kitchen equipment
• You have knowledge of food safety principles and portion control standards
• You are able to maintain good housekeeping and sanitary condition of work area
• You have knowledge of health and safety standards (such as Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), etc.)
Other Essential Skills
• You can acquire understanding of organizational policies and protocols in order to maintain safety and security of kitchen, staff, and resident helpers
• You have communication and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively within a team environment
• You are able to supervise and train resident helpers in a professional manner
• You have writing skills to prepare reports
• You have problem-solving skills to identify and resolve equipment/appliance malfunctions and food service issues
