What can I expect to do in this role?
Assistant Fish Culture Technician Work DescriptionIn this role, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:
• Assist fish culture station staff by performing technical duties related to the culture of fish and the operation and maintenance of the station, such as tank cleaning, disinfection, and equipment maintenance (e.g. piping, valves, etc.).
• Provide customer service assistance by providing tours of the facility to the visitors and responding to questions on the fish culture program.
• Assist staff by performing daily fish culture activities, including feeding, inventories, picking of losses, fish marking, anaesthetizing, thinning, disease sampling, record keeping, etc.
• Assist with checking oxygen levels, temperatures and flow rates, and make adjustments as required.
• Assist fish culture station staff in observing fish behaviour, mortality trends, densities, etc., and advising fish culture technician and operation coordinators.
• Assist with computer work by creating spreadsheets and performing data entry, word processing, etc.
• Participate in a team environment to assist in implementing fish culture station operational goals and objectives.
• Assist with fish health monitoring, using microscope for identification of disease and following biosecurity protocol at the operation of fish culture station.
• Assist with buildings, grounds, equipment maintenance, and advising technicians of minor repairs, as well as operating and maintaining fish culture equipment.
Note: Students, while in the workplace, must conduct themselves in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any workplace practices as directed by their immediate supervisor and in accordance with the Internal Responsibility System as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Assistant Fisheries Technician Work DescriptionIn this role, you may have the opportunity to participate in field work, which may include assisting Great Lakes staff and technicians with some or all of the following activities:
• Conduct surveys, data collection, mapping, inspections, interviews, and day-to-day assigned activities.
• Egg collection, fish culture; fisheries population and habitat assessment; creel surveys; lake and stream surveys; index sampling; habitat and substrate assessment; and classification of streams, rivers, and lakes.
• Operate equipment (e.g. pumps; gill, seine, and fyke nets; limn logical sampling; YSI/Hydro lab, sonars; weight scales; lab equipment) related to fish stocking.
• Assist as a deck hand while working on boats.
• Perform research, conduct analysis, and evaluate environmental information and data to assist in producing reports.
Note: Some positions will require operation of boats, motors, trucks, all-terrain vehicle (ATVs), and other specialized equipment. Positions will involve work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions.
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):
- Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
- Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.
- Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
- Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements for Assistant Fish Culture Technician:
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
• You apply your written communication skills to document findings, record data, and prepare and maintain a variety of documents (e.g. maintenance schedules, etc.).
• You apply your verbal communication and customer service skills to respond to fish culture staff, the public and/or internal clients.
• You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and participate in meetings.
Technical Skills and Knowledge:
• You have an interest in understanding fish culture techniques and hatchery methods and procedures.
• You have an interest in the fish culture program, the overall fisheries management program, species at risk, and biodiversity.
• You have an interest in resource management principles.
• You apply your knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word (word processing) and Excel (spreadsheets), as well as databases, email, and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
Analytical and Organizational Skills:
• You apply your organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills to conduct research and data compilation, including assembling information from hardcopy and digital sources, and perform data entry and analysis.
Other Requirements:
• You are able to work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
• You are willing and able to accompany fish culture staff on fish stocking assignments throughout the region.
• You are able to work in a strenuous environment and inclement weather.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements for Assistant Fisheries Technician:

• You apply your written communication skills to document findings, record data, and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports).
• You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively in a team environment and have a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently.
Technical Skills and Knowledge:
• You apply your experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), and PowerPoint (presentations), as well as email and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
Analytical and Organizational Skills:
• You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review, and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means.
• You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines.
Other Requirements:
• You are able to work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
• You are able to travel with staff on multi-day outdoor field trips in adverse weather conditions.
• Certain positions require that you possess a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's Licence or equivalent.
• Certain positions require that you possess a Pleasure Craft Operator Card and certification in Standard First Aid and CPR.
