What can I expect to do in this role?

In these positions, you will:
• Gather, document, assess and triage information (concerns, complaints and critical incidents) received regarding Long-Term Care Homes in Ontario.
• Determine the severity of the information received and outline the associated risks to residents.
• Determine the inspection program's response and action.
• Support and conduct inquiries and off-site inspections as required.
• Prepare correspondence, briefing notes and other materials as required.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Current registration as a Registered Practical Nurse (at minimum) with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Willingness to travel small distances on a periodic basis for training and education.

Communication, Listening and Interviewing Skills:

• You have the ability to deal with contentious issues, sensitive personal health information and complaints from upset or angry individuals.
• You are able to effectively communicate with the residents, complainants, stakeholders, the public and LTC Home staff.
• You can communicate with persons about complex health care issues.

Clinical Nursing and Assessment Skills:

• You have the ability to assess information gained from discussions and interviews regarding the care and services provided to residents.
• You are able to determine if there is a true risk of harm to residents.
• You are able to discuss medically complex situations and current clinical best practices with other health professionals.
• You possess the ability to determine what legislative requirements may be in non-compliance.

Knowledge of Health Care Operations:

• You have demonstrated knowledge of long-term care homes and health care system operations.
• You have proven knowledge of current health care practices (e.g. medication administration, skin and wound care, pain management, responsive behaviours, etc.).
• You have the ability to interpret, apply and ensure compliance with relevant acts and regulations governing Long-Term Care homes (e.g. Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, the Provincial Offences Act, etc.).

Problem-Solving and Conflict Resolution Skills:

• You have the ability to appropriately respond to complaints about resident care and services.
• You are able to prepare ministerial responses to resident care issues.
• You have the ability to diffuse and resolve contentious and highly sensitive issues.

Other Important Skills:

• You possess written communication and computer skills to develop correspondence and briefing notes.
• You have the ability to work collaboratively within a provincial team.
• You have the ability to work independently and make logical decisions in an emotional, high stress environment.
