Do you want to contribute to the food safety of meat products for the people of Ontario?

If so, then consider joining the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as a Meat Hygiene Officer where you will conduct food safety and regulatory compliance inspections of provincially licensed meat processing plants.

What can I expect to do in this role?

• conduct inspections of live animals including cattle, hogs, poultry, small ruminants and exotic species according to established procedures;
• oversee slaughter and conduct post-mortem inspection of carcasses according to established procedures;
• monitor plant activities and conduct daily assessments, ensuring that practices for safe food handling and disposal have been followed; and,
• monitor food processing operations and enforce compliance with packaging and labeling requirements.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are able to travel extensively to areas where public transportation is not available
• You are able to perform duties in adverse conditions such as extreme heat or cold

Essential Skills

• You have analytical and problem solving skills to evaluate situations and develop recommendations for resolution
• You have communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with internal/external staff and clients and resolve issues as they arise
• You have conflict resolution skills to achieve compliance or diffuse difficult situations; ability to deal with difficult individuals in a professional manner
• You have computer skills to work with various applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• You have experience assessing compliance with established standards, guidelines or procedures

Knowledge

• You have knowledge or experience interpreting and enforcing federal or provincial legislation
• You have knowledge of the principles of food safety, hygienic handling and food processing

Additional Information

• Candidates who have not successfully completed the Ontario Meat Hygiene Officer Certification process will be considered on an underfill basis as an Agricultural Specialist 2 with a salary range of $988.95 to $1,159.93.
