What can I expect to do in this role?

As a member of our enforcement team, you will:
• participate in the delivery of a multi-service integrated compliance program
• deliver planned compliance
• provide education and information related to natural resource management and protection

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• possess a valid driver's licence to conduct field work
• possess a valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate or ability to obtain
• possess a valid pleasure craft operator's card or ability to obtain
• possess a valid Ontario hunting licence
• ability to successfully complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course or successfully challenge the exam
• completed use of force training and firearms training
• ability to qualify and be appointed as a Conservation Officer
• ability to work shifts, weekends and holidays and are able to travel for extended periods of time
• ability to work in remote and isolated locations

Enforcement skills:

• proven experience enforcing natural resource and public safety related legislation, policies and regulations
• knowledge of enforcement and investigation techniques, methods and procedures
• knowledge of rules of evidence, lawful searches and seizures to conduct investigations and gather evidence
• knowledge of legal documents and court procedures to prosecute violators

Technical knowledge:

• knowledge of natural resource management principles including the areas of commercial and sport fisheries, game and non-game species of wildlife and forestry
• ability to interpret and apply related legislation such as Fisheries Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Forest Sustainability Act, and Provincial Offences Act
• proficiency in the sports of hunting and fishing, handling firearms and other sporting equipment
• proficient in the operation of related recreation vehicles such as watercraft, snowmobiles, ATV's

Communication skills:

• ability to prepare legal court documents
• ability to effectively provide testimony in court
• ability to prepare and deliver presentations to public interest groups such as fish and game clubs, naturalist groups, and public schools
• strong communication skills to respond to requests for information verbally and in writing
• ability to deal tactfully with the public, staff and media

Analytical and investigation skills:

• demonstrated skills to assess activities for compliance
• ability to gather information and evidence
• ability to identify problems and recommend solutions

General skills:

• demonstrated ability to work independently and without direct supervision
• ability to independently make sound decisions and to work as a member of a team
• proven organizational and planning skills
• proficient with computers using various software applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, databases, email and internet
