We are looking for an outstanding individual to join our multi-disciplinary team in the preparation of preliminary and detail designs, planning and design reports, and contract packages required for the multi-year capital construction program.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:
• assemble, investigate and analyze data to determine and develop the recommended design for new construction and rehabilitation/reconstruction of highways and/or planning of roadway improvements
• liaise with relevant internal Sections/Offices and external agencies regarding the technical input for contract requirements and coordinating information into the project
• provide technical advice and support to project managers/engineers in the development of project scope, schedule and costs, in consultant acquisition and management and reviewing corridor management issues
• prepare and/or review contract drawings and documents for the construction of transportation projects which are both biddable and constructable by assembling standards and specifications relative to the project
• prepare various documents, reports, plans, estimates and presentation material
• provide leadership, direction and training to junior staff and other staff on temporary assignment to the section in the completion of planning and design projects and tasks.

How do I qualify?

Technical knowledge:

• You have knowledge of civil engineering technology, highway planning and design, construction practices and related technical disciplines, such as geotechnical, survey, drainage, hydrology, environmental, traffic engineering.
• You have proficiency with highway design computer applications to prepare preliminary design and detail design contract packages, including computer aided drawing and design (CADD), and highway design systems.
• You have knowledge of mathematics related to highway geometric design and estimation practices to prepare contract packages that are both biddable and constructible.
• You can interpret and apply related legislation, standards, directives, policies, and specifications.
• You have knowledge of consultant acquisition procedures, assignments/agreements and management.

Analytical and organizational skills:

• You have well developed research, investigative, analytical and evaluative skills to develop and assess technical alternatives.
• You have sound judgement skills to determine relevant data and respond to issues.
• You have organizational skills to coordinate own work activities and those of assigned junior staff.

People skills:

• You have oral communication skills and can explain technical aspects of specific work projects.
• You can build and maintain effective working relationships.
• You can liaise with stakeholders on matters related to work project issues.
• You have written communication skills to prepare reports, write letters and prepare presentation materials.
