FIRE PROTECTION ADVISER

Your fire protection and safety expertise are sought by the Office of the Fire Marshal to monitor fire protection services and provide support to municipalities.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this challenging position, you will:

• analyze issues and trends associated with fire protection and safety (municipal and unincorporated territory)
• liaise with other ministries and agencies such as municipalities, professional organizations, police services personnel, emergency responders, aboriginal organizations, and stakeholders in emergency and non-emergency situations
• advise on the application of relevant legislation
• make recommendations to improve fire service programs
• provide coaching/mentoring, training, problem solving, conflict resolution and continuous improvement
• support projects and initiatives.

1 permanent position at 640 Mountdale Avenue, Thunder Bay, North Region
1 permanent position at 3767 Hwy 69 South, Sudbury, North Region
1 permanent position at 5520 Hwy 101 East, South Porcupine, North Region
1 temporary position (bilingual - up to 12 months) at 3767 Hwy 69 South, Sudbury, North Region

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• You must be able to travel within Ontario and work unconventional hours.
• You must have a minimum valid driver's licence class of “G” or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.

Knowledge of fire protection and prevention:

• You have demonstrated knowledge of all areas of fire protection.
• You have a demonstrated understanding of municipal fire service delivery systems and practices (municipal and unincorporated territory).
• You have a proven ability to apply and interpret legislation including the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 and other relevant legislation, standards and codes.

Consultation, communication and negotiation skills:

• You have strong oral and written communication and consultation skills to provide effective guidance and advice to stakeholders.
• You have demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills to mediate disputes and resolve problems.
• You have demonstrated that you can work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders and officials.

Program management and evaluation skills:

• You have proven research and analytical skills to evaluate program effectiveness, assess risks, and to gather information and prepare/present reports.
• You have proven problem-solving skills to recommend effective solutions.
• You have written communication and computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and email.
• You have project and time management skills to prioritize, plan and manage competing day-to- day demands.
