The Office of the Employer Adviser is an independent agency of the Ministry of Labour and has been providing expert advice and representation to Ontario employers regarding their workplace safety and insurance issues since 1985.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role you will support employers by:
• explaining their rights and obligations under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and related regulations, policies, procedures and processes
• helping them with their interactions with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board
• providing representation at negotiations, mediations and hearings
• promoting early resolution of disputes

Location information: The work location will be determined by the successful candidate.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirement:

• You must possess a valid driver's licence and have the ability to travel within the designated service area.

Technical knowledge:

• You have in-depth knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and related regulations, policies, procedures.
• You have advanced knowledge of legal and medical terminology.
• You have a basic understanding of the local economy, business climate and related issues.

Advocacy skills:

• You are able to effectively communicate the needs and best interests of the client.
• You are able to develop and articulate clear and focused points and arguments.
• You have knowledge of alternative dispute resolution and negotiation techniques to promote early resolution of disputes.
• You are able to represent employers in negotiations, mediations and hearings.

Communication, relationship management and customer service skills:

• You are able to provide advice and information, interview witnesses and present evidence and arguments at hearings.
• You are able to establish client trust and confidence.
• You have an understanding of the client/consultant relationship with a respect for confidentiality.

Research, analysis, evaluation and problem solving skills:

• You are able to probe in interviews, gather and assess case information and develop strong arguments.
• You have the ability to conduct complex legal/medical research (via the internet, medical dictionaries, etc.).

Other important skills:

• You are proficient in planning and time management in order to independently manage a caseload and meet deadlines in a high volume environment.
• You are proficient in the use of common office software (eg. spreadsheet,
word processing, presentations, case management, etc.).
