The Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General seeks a Director for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU is Ontario's independent civilian body responsible for conducting investigations into serious injuries and deaths arising in the course of police work throughout the province. The SIU has jurisdiction over the Ontario Provincial Police and municipal police services across the province. The SIU has a full time staff complement of approximately 50 staff members in both investigative and administrative support roles, with an annual budget of approximately $7.5 million.
What can I expect to do in this role?
As Director, you will exercise the authority and responsibility set out in section 113 of the Ontario Police Services Act and the regulations. You will oversee all aspects of investigations; decide when an investigation is appropriate; make determinations as to whether or not criminal charges should be laid; establish practices and policies for the operation of the SIU; and maintain open and constructive relationships with police and community organizations.
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
LL.B. or J.D. and membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada or another provincial bar with ability to transfer to Ontario.
Knowledge and Skills
Thorough knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, other relevant federal/provincial statutes (e.g., Ontario Police Services Act) and rules of evidence; ability to direct criminal investigations; knowledge of criminal investigation methods/techniques; excellent leadership/analytical/judgement skills; strong communication/stakeholder management skills; understanding of civilian oversight of police, community relations and policing services; human resources and financial management skills.
Note: In accordance with the Ontario Police Services Act, sub-section 113(3), a person who is a police officer or former police officer shall not be appointed as Director.
