The Ministry of the Attorney General, Office of Legislative Counsel, offers a challenging opportunity for one Translation Counsel to revise the French version of legislation and to provide advice on legislative matters.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Duties Will Include: Ensure that the French version of Ontario legislation accurately reflects in law the effect and intent of the English version; work closely with and provide professional input to legislation translation staff and legislative counsel on the preparation of the French version of Ontario legislation and its compliance with French and English legislative drafting standards and conventions and legal terminology; advise government and members of the Assembly on legal and drafting matters concerning the French version of legislation; for that purpose, attend Legislative Assembly and its committees, as requested; prepare and give oral and written legal opinions; assist with corporate projects that require a sound understanding of our legal system.

Membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada

Knowledge & Skills

Very high fluency in French and English and superior knowledge of French and English legal terminology; experience in working with legislation in French and English; demonstrated exceptional legal revision skills; knowledge of legislative translation practices and techniques; skill in statutory interpretation, including bilingual statutory interpretation; interest in legislative drafting; concern for the rule of law; integrity; ability to work independently and as part of a team; capacity for both big picture thinking and attention to detail; ability to manage competing priorities; excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; excellent word processing skills.
