What can I expect to do in this role?
Work Description:
• Assist senior cook with day to day food preparation, serving, and cleaning for approximately 40 staff. E.g. basic food preparation, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, sweeping floors, washing dishes, recycling, unpacking deliveries.
• Prepare food list requirements and ensure supply orders are correct
• Assist with ensuring food is properly cooked and distributed on time
• Assist with offering alternative meals to individuals with special dietary needs
• Maintain the cookery in a clean and orderly fashion
• Assist with cooking and preparing foods appropriate to the program in accordance with Canada's Health Food Guide
• Position requires lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations
• Work may require experience specified/listed in the questions below or other similar tasks as assigned
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
All positions require students to be 15 years of age on the first day of employment with no age limit.
Some positions require students to be 15-24 years of age (or 15-29 years of age if you are a person with a disability) on the first day of employment due to program funding.
Some positions on this job ad will require the successful candidate to undergo a general-level screening check, which includes a criminal record check, at their own expense.
Qualifications required
Communication and Organization Skills
• You use your interpersonal communication skills to work collaboratively within a team environment and to deal tactfully with staff in a high volume food service environment
• You use your communication skill to listen, follow directions and seek clarification as required
• You use your organizational skills to perform work in an orderly and timely way
Technical Skills
• You use your knowledge of operations and maintenance of a kitchen and cookery to serve large groups of people
• You use your knowledge of safe food preparation and handling practices and techniques
Requirements and Work Habits
• Ability to work in a Kitchen environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations
• Ability and comfort in operating small equipment (e.g. dish washer and cleaning equipment)
• Ability to follow directions and seek clarification
• Ability to be organized and punctual
• Ability to work flexible hours and some weekends to provide and assist with the preparation of three (3) meals per day
• You will be provided with training on the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
