The position includes responsibility for Schools for the Deaf where American Sign Language (ASL) is the primary language of instruction. Do you have a demonstrated track record of success and leadership in educational administration? Do you hold expertise, experience and interest in the education of exceptional students in particular students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing? If so, consider bringing your professional expertise to the Provincial Schools Branch.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• build a shared vision of student and system success providing leadership to the Schools for the Deaf and other assigned portfolios
• ensure consistency and accountability for effective planning, delivery and monitoring of quality education in a school, residential or resource setting, empowering others to work in the best interest of all students
• manage teaching, support and professional staff including issue management, working with multiple bargaining agents
• engage parents, stakeholders and staff in a positive culture of mutual respect focused on student success
• lead legislative and policy initiatives ensuring development, communication and compliance
• work collaboratively with senior management to ensure a team approach in meeting system needs across schools and programs

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• You must be a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.
• You must have a Supervisory Officer Certificate.
• You must have a Deaf Specialist qualification.
• You must have knowledge of bilingual education.
• You must have awareness of ASL community/culture.

An effective ability to communicate in ASL is considered an asset for this position.

Leadership skills:

• You can inspire a shared vision of system leadership, support a positive working and learning environment and model professionlism and integrity.
• You can evaluate performance and instructional leadership capabilities of principals and vice-principals.
• You can lead staff in a unionized environment and have experience working with collective agreements (PSAT, AMAPCEO, OPSEU).

Strategic thinking, analytical and problem solving skills:

• You are a strategic thinker, creative problem solver and can work collaboratively with a team of senior level education professionals and stakeholders.
• You have analytical and problem solving skills and display political acuity and professionalism when dealing with complex and/or contentious situations.

Stakeholder management skills:

• You have experience building and maintaining relationships across the organization and with external partners.
• You have excellent communication skills to provide briefings on program issues, represent the ministry with school boards, teachers and parents.

Specialized knowledge:

• You have knowledge of legislation, professional regulations, priorities and directions related to education in Ontario.
