The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines is seeking a talented professional with sand, gravel and bedrock aggregates expertise to become part of its Earth Resources and Geoscience Mapping team. Bring your technical expertise in geology to the Ontario Geological Survey, Earth Resources and Geoscience Mapping Section, where you will play a key role in the section's aggregate/industrial mineral mapping program.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
• conduct field investigations in all areas of the province for surficial (sand and gravel) and bedrock aggregate/industrial mineral deposits as well as office based data compilation leading to the creation of high quality maps, reports and presentations
• ensure proper procedures are carried out by contractors with regard to sampling, testing and survey techniques
• liaise with and provide geological information, technical interpretation and advice to representatives from the aggregate/minerals industry, First Nations, academia, governments and the public
• prepare geotechnical reports and maps, graphics and poster presentations to communicate geoscience results of projects
• attend hearings and provide expert testimony for the ministry in mineral aggregate and industrial mineral matters (e.g. Ontario Municipal Board)

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must be a registered geoscientist or geoscientist-in-training in good standing with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) or with another regulated association of geoscientists.
• You must have a valid driver's licence in order to complete field work.
• You must be able to operate road and water vehicles, such as 4-wheel drive trucks, ATVs, boats, and canoes, and be able to orienteer, navigate and camp in remote areas.

Specialized knowledge and expertise:

• You have knowledge and understanding of current geoscientific theories, practices and techniques and advanced knowledge within several sub-disciplines of geology (e.g. sedimentology, glacial geology, stratigraphy, geochemistry, carbonate geology) that are applicable to aggregate resource and industrial mineral studies in the Precambrian, Paleozoic/Mesozoic and Quaternary Periods, acquired by means of a degree in earth sciences or experience in the relevant field(s).
• You have knowledge of aggregate sampling techniques, provincial aggregate standards (e.g. Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications), aggregate uses and material testing protocols.
• You have experience conducting field-based geological studies pertinent to aggregate and industrial mineral studies.
• You have knowledge of orienteering, GPS technology, satellite imagery and air photo interpretation.
• You have knowledge of pertinent legislation (e.g. Aggregate Resources Act, Mining Act, Planning Act) and regulations affecting the aggregate and industrial minerals industries.

Leadership skills:

• You have the ability to provide overall direction, group leadership and guidance to field crews.
• You have demonstrated project management skills to work on geological projects with various teams and can provide leadership in a results based environment.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have demonstrated communication skills to produce geological maps and reports, and develop and conduct presentations.
• You are able to relate, clarify and exchange project-related information to colleagues and peers, the public, government, First Nations, academic and mineral industry clients.
• You have strong interpersonal skills to interact and provide advice to clients, participate as a team member on multidisciplinary projects and resolve issues with field crew staff.

Research and analytical skills:

• You are able to develop and implement aggregate resource/industrial minerals projects and to interpret and organize project-related geoscience data and observations.
• You are able to perform geological/aggregate material sampling and field observations to assist with geological interpretation and mapping.

Other important skills:

• You have planning, organizational and problem-solving skills to assist with the planning and design of geoscience projects including logistics, supplies, equipment, scheduling activities and developing work plans.
• You have experience with applicable computer software and hardware including software for map production, databases, spreadsheets and word processing.
