Consider this opportunity with the Advisory, Objections, Appeals and Services Branch, Tax and Benefits Administration in the Ministry of Finance where you will foster compliance and ensure the integrity of complex tax legislation.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• conduct comprehensive research on matters pertaining to tax and other related legislation and tax administration issues;
• provide interpretations and rulings on tax and related issues;
• identify problems and develop solutions;
• prepare written briefs and reports on legislative, administrative and policy matters;
• represent the ministry at meetings or committees with clients and stakeholders including other government jurisdictions to build relationships and gain buy-in on program initiatives, reconcile divergent viewpoints and gain co-operation;
• propose legislative and policy amendments.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are proficient in English and have advanced level oral and written French language skills.

Analytical, Research and Problem-Solving Skills:

• You have strong research skills to conduct self-directed research into various legislative and related tax administration issues and cases.
• You have analytical skills to interpret legislation and tax administration policies in response to contentious issues.
• You have demonstrated ability to evaluate financial and business transactions to assess policy applications and develop opinions.
• You have excellent problem-solving skills to identify problems and inconsistencies in existing law or policy and make recommendations for changes to legislation.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• You have communication skills to discuss and/or present complex issues with taxpayers or their representatives and senior officials.
• You have demonstrated ability to prepare written interpretative opinions, reports, position papers, publications and correspondence for the Minister.
• You have consultation skills to effectively address and resolve taxation issues.
• You have influencing and negotiating skills to elicit and promote cooperation in contentious areas of taxation.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

• You have ability to interpret and apply legislation and administrative policy in tax situations.
• You have knowledge of the legislative development and policy-making process to develop and evaluate legislative and policy proposals.
• You have knowledge of financial accounting/auditing principles, policies and law.
• You have strong project management skills to plan, lead and oversee major projects related to complex tax administration matters.
