Do you have a knack for keeping things clean and organized? Come join the Toronto South Detention Centre team as a Laundry Worker, where you will assist with the collection, sorting and delivering of offender laundry, as well as the operation of the facility warehouse.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
• Perform full laundry duties
• Deliver laundry to all areas of the facility by collecting, transporting, loading and unloading carts and vehicles
• Keep an inventory of cleaning products, chemicals, and linen supplies
• Maintain work area by cleaning and disinfecting equipment, containers, and carts, and report equipment issues to supervisor
• Work with assigned offender helpers in the laundry area, instructing, evaluating and guiding them in their assigned responsibilities
• Ensure safety and security of laundry helpers and security of laundry equipment, cleaning products, chemicals and work areas

How do I qualify?

Technical and Safety Knowledge and Skills:

• You have knowledge of laundry processes such as treatment of linens and clothing, use of cleaning products and chemicals, and operation of laundry equipment
• You have knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) and related procedures regarding the handling of soiled laundry
• You have the ability to apply knowledge of security practices and techniques to ensure custody and control of offender helpers and security of work area

Analytical Skills:

• You can sort clothing and bedding by type of fabric and colour to determine appropriate wash cycle or temperature settings for different types of materials
• You can provide input into offender disciplinary and performance reports and recognize security and workplace hazards so that corrective action can be prompt
• You can determine and maintain records of usage and ensure adequate stock to meet established clothing and bedding quotas

Communication Skills:

• You can exchange facts and information and follow general instructions regarding laundry tasks
• You can identify and report mechanical failures of laundry equipment and record inventory and cleaning logs
• You can supervise and train inmate helpers in laundry methods and procedures

Tact and Discretion:

• You have ability to maintain control of offender helpers, deal with behavioural issues, and ensure adherence to institutional safety and security policies and procedures
