The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) requires an expert employment and labour relations practitioner, with specialized knowledge of the construction industry, to mediate cases between employers, unions and employees and settle complex and sensitive labour relations and employment disputes.

About the job

You will:
• lead complex mediations and resolve disputes in sensitive and specialized cases
• analyze cases to focus issues and discussions and direct the efforts of the parties towards settlement
• act as a mentor to develop and train staff through tutorials and on-the-job exposure
• develops guides and procedures for new and evolving facets of the Board's work

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's license upon being hired.

Analytical and Judgment Skills

• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and apply significant independent judgement and sound decision-making on the spot.

Labour Relations Knowledge

• Knowledge of labour relations theory, principles and practices, relevant legislation, statutes and regulations.
• Knowledge of employment standards and health and safety practices, processes and policies and employment rights under common law.
• Knowledge of developments in the labour relations/ employment law field, and Board jurisprudence and processes..
• Experience applying mediation techniques and practices to mediate between parties and achieve satisfactory outcomes.
• Knowledge of the rules of evidence and the conduct of hearings to facilitate procedural and factual agreements.

Construction Industry Knowledge

• Knowledge of the construction industry, related regulations, and construction employment law in the construction field.

Communication and Negotiation Skills

• Demonstrated interpersonal and communications skills to gain and maintain confidence, credibility and respect of the parties in a mediation setting.
• Proven negotiation skills to resolve high-profile, complex disputes.
